Christmas Details Competition
There appears to be no Christmas Competition this year, certainly not in the review Section.
The Independent no longer surprises me. But it is disappointing.
I post up one of Bellini's Madonna series - "The Greek Madonna", which I think is one of the most perfect that he created.
I still miss Tom Lubbock's articles and postings. He was a great loss.

Like you, I was very disappointed not to find my favourite competition. I bought today's issue, and was worried that I might have missed it in the previous issue. Merry Christmas to you!
I too am very disappointed. The competition has become part of our Christmas. Why no explanation for its absence?
Yes, very disappointing - it breaks a tradition of over twenty years. Looking back (I keep all the Christmas quizzes and answers) I note that in 1999 (Tom Lubbock) the quiz appeared on Boxing Day which was a Sunday. Let us hope that we will have a quiz next Sunday to engage us over New YeYear, but I am not optimistic. Happy Christmas to all.
I had not thought of the possibility of a Boxing Day publication date. (There was also a gap in 2010 when Tom Lubbock was seriously ill.) You make a good observation which keeps ones hopes alive!
Very disappointing indeed. I too hope the Boxing Day suggestion is a possibility! I have emailed the paper to ask. If I get a reply I will post here.
Sitting in Stockholm waiting for my sister to send this years 'Details' over and ... nothing. She's phoned the paper and hasn't had a sensible answer from anyone there. Such a shame. The first one we did was Dogs as I recall, probably early '90s. Let's hope for the Boxing Day possibility. Will keep checking this blog and start doing some old ones to keep spirits up.
That's a great idea, Nick. All the old Christmas competitions are on this blog, if you look for them further back. I supplied quite a few of these, but I am indebted to Jenny who several years ago sent me all the earlier ones that I did not have. I deliberately did not post up all the answers, but if you or anyone runs out of patience, send an email to me on vonthoma@yahoo.com and I shall send them to you.
On another point, I thought the A Dogs Life Christmas Competition was in 2012?
Talking of Stockholm, I see that the recent series of The Bridge had an art themed sequence of extremely gruesome murders, (as well as superb acting from Sofia Helin).
I have received a reply from the New Review editor to my query about the Christmas Details Competition, which contains the following:
"The plan is to try to publish a bumper Details competition along the lines of the Christmas edition at some point in the New Year, ideally before Easter."
The editor told me that he is sorry about the lack of a Christmas Competition and that a number of readers were disappointed. So we can look forward to a Christmas style competition in the New Year.
I think that the responses of those who have commented have had some effect!
I too got a reply ....
First, many thanks, as ever, for buying and reading the Independent on Sunday and the New Review – we very much appreciate it.
Thanks also for writing in to express your concern about the absence of this year’s Details Christmas competition. I, too, am disappointed that it didn’t run. We had in mind an issue date for its publication, but due to pressure of space in the New Review in the run-up to Christmas, I took the decision to drop it, rightly or wrongly. You are certainly not the only valued reader to write in and enquire about its absence! I apologise that we have disappointed you in this way.
The plan is to try to publish a bumper Details competition along the lines of the Christmas edition at some point in the New Year, ideally before Easter – so keep your eyes peeled!
Thank you again for your email and your support of the newspaper.

Thank you for posting the reply from the IoS and to readers who took the time to write. I suspected that pressure of space, and the greater demands of raising finance through advertising, might have edged the quiz out, which of course takes a whole page (and then another page for the answers). I fancy it will be nearer to Easter when we get the 'bumper' issue - I wonder if Jenny Gilbert had actually prepared it?. It is disappointing, the habit and pleasure of tackling the quiz before and over Christmas is special to me and has taught me an awful lot about art history, not least making me look at my books more closely.
And to Details Detective: Yes, Sofia Helin's acting in 'The Bridge' 3 was extraordinary, as indeed was the entire show.
Thanks for the feedback from Details Detective,Clecky etc at least we all know where we stand although hugely disappointing after 20 years or so.At least we can have a go at some of the old ones itemised on this blog site for a bit of a fix.
Upon reflection I think my recollection of the 'Dog Theme' one from the early 90's was in fact a single infuriating picture that we couldn't find of a Jack Russelly looking mutt.
As for 'The Bridge'I wish I could join in with the enthusiasm but we get Swedish subtitles rather than English over here.Inconsiderate Scandinavians!
I too miss the Christmas Details. The decision to leave it out in favour of other things, is I think an indication of the general direction in which the newspaper is heading. Tom Lubbock - a sad loss.
I was the lucky winner of the 1996 Christmas Details ( case of champagne - not prosecco!!) and have had a go each time since. Now I have no excuse to skip the TV, to trawl through my books.
