Details 1187 - Another obscure print from the United States - Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio
One can only say "I told you so" about these impossible print details. We have ended up at the logical consequence of Jenny Gilbert's policy: few, if any can find the details of such prints. The Christmas Competition was proof of this. This recent detail 1187 has achieved something which has not happened for 20 years - there were not three winners, only one correct answer. I hardly see how this will encourage anyone to take an interest in the Competition, or indeed, buy the paper.
A recent correspondent has noted that a very large number of details come from the Art Institute of Chicago and another that many come from the same reference book. It would be interesting to know if the said reference book contains this obscure Altdorfer print.
I think that J Knapman of Weybridge deserves all three bottles this week. (I think it's at least his/her tenth win in ten years or more, so s/he deserves it.)

The Altdorfer drawing (not a painting) is not in the book Jenny Gilbert has used for her source of so many Details; inevitably this has dried up in recent weeks.
What irritates me is that often the one-liner 'clues' are incorrect; e.g. she described a recent Signac Detail as taking tea, it was in fact entitled 'Le Petit Dejeuner'; the Altdorfer drawing was not 'billowing hair', it is a headdress.
I was a winner in the competition at the very beginning of last month and still have not received the champagne despite a couple of e-mails requesting confirmation (unanswered)of the bottle having been sent. Have other winners experienced this non-delivery?
Hello Anonymous. I have knowledge of many winners experiencing delays, some very lengthy indeed. These days, the Competition states "allow 28 days for delivery". My advice is to write to customer services: customerservices@independent.co.uk not the details e-mail address. They are usually quite responsive and take it forward with the department. If the bottle does not arrive, then write to them again. I do know that they do seem to change their systems from time to time. Recently, I received a bottle of champagne in the week before my name was published on the Sunday. However, I know of others who say they have not received their bottle, or who had to wait for months. I really believe it does depend on patience and persistence, as winners sometimes give up. Of course, it is unacceptable, but if you want the prize, it can be the only way to proceed.
Thanks for the information, Anonymous! This must mean that you are not J Knapman, too. I'd be interested to know how that Altdorfer detail was identified. Agree about the incorrect clues, too. I was clear right from the beginning that this was not "billowing hair", but ostrich feathers, probably. I thought it was a headdress from a carnival or masque. However, I could not have been more wrong, as it turned out.
Of course we have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous with the last two details, which are from very well known paintings.

No, I am not J. Knapman; I wish I were. I feel the said person must have got hold of an out-of-print copy of 'The Bumper Book of Extremely Obscure Drawings' which JG is using as the source for these 'paintings'. This surely must be the source for the Altdorfer!
